Hello, my name is Freddy Howell. My husband, John, and I own the Wild Bird Center in Los Gatos, California. We opened the store in October 1995 and have celebrated 13 wonderful years in Los Gatos.

John and I met thirty some odd years ago while working together at Stevens Fashion Fabrics. Since that time, we have always shared a common goal to one day have the opportunity to work together in our own retail store. As a child, my parents introduced me to birding and John learned to enjoy birding through our marriage. So a bird feeding emporium sounded like a great way to make our dream come true. The Wild Bird Center franchise provided the business model that allowed us to combine our love of nature and birds with our desire to give back to the community as well as earn a living. My parent's legacy allowed us the where-with-all and inspiration to make it happen.

Over the last 13 years, we are proud to say that we have indeed given back to the community. Through affordable school programs, free outreach presentations on our neighborhood birds to local non-profits, in-store classes for children and adults and through our Saturday bird walks and field trips, we have provided many wonderful hours of education and memorable experiences. Yet, we have received back much more than we have given. We have gained a family. Many of our first customers still shop with us, many have become friends and several have become valued employees.

Our mission is to create magic and adventure through the love and experience of nature. In order to bring this mission to reality, we strive not just to be the best "general store for nature lovers" but also to be "not just a store but a community resource". We support and work closely with many partners in the environmental arena (See our Partners and Links button).
