Featured now are backyard feeder birds. Now that fall has arrived, birds will become more active at our backyard feeders. You will notice the winter sparrows will soon make an appearance. They migrate but are in Utah all year. How so? Their migration is from the mountain top to the valley floor. Winter sparrows are ground feeders, so they must come down into the valley, as snow accumulates higher up on the mountain. Some of the winter sparrows that you will notice are the Junco and Spotted Towhee. The Northern Flicker comes into the yard looking for suet. Ants are his primary food supply. However, they are now below the frost line and will not return to the surface until spring. Many other birds will set up camp in our backyards for winter. The feeders and heated water features are most important to them now.
