Treat yourself to a birdwalk with us!

JOIN US ON OUR NEXT BIRD WALK!

Our event to the East side of the Sandia Mountains in the Open Space behind the old church had to be changed sue to BEAR sightings. The ranger office colsed the area off, many of the mountain areas are closed throught the Sandia's until November due to BEAR issues. Instead we wandered the Bosque area near the store in search of feather friends and heard a Summer Tanager, saw Wood Duck, Mexican Mallard, Northern Flicker, Lesser Goldfinch, White Breasted Nuthatch, Black Phoebe and Say's Phoebe.

Our next event is October 4th. We will be contributing to the Belen Marsh Group's efforts to CLEAN UP the MARSH by participating in the TREK for TRASH at the Belen Marsh. We will meet in Belen at 8:00 am (birind can be done in conjuction tot he clean up) to do our part. Bring gloves, wear long pants and boots and Join Us!

Our last Belen Marsh walk in September was a great success, even though we had to take shelter in our cars while a late rain shower freshened the air, but then the sun broke through and like Burrowing Owls we re-emerged and had a great evening of birds.

These are the birds seen that evening and this is why we awant to clean up the Marsh:
Black-necked stilt
Wilson's snipe
Western sandpiper
Wilson's phalarope
Long-billed dowitcher
Yellow-headed blackbird
Great tailed Grackle
Great Blue Heron
Cattle egret
Snowly egret
Semipalmated sandpiper
Least sandpiper
Barid's sabdpiper
Killdear
Barn swallow
Western Kingbird
Turkey Vulture
Mallard
American Coot
Sora
Brown headed cowbird
Black-chinned Hummingbird
We had a good turn out of about 15 people and we thank all who participated in this evening event!

The Belen Wet Ponds is an area of interest for conservation. A committee has formed to look at the possibility of working with the Valencia County Fair Association to presreve and c;ean up this area to maintain this wonderful birding area for the community. There is a record of 96 species seen here, some nesting wetland birds which makes this an exciting area and well worth preserving!

Stop by the store to learn how you can help preserve this wetland!

Cheers and Good Birding to all!
